Zoo lions present a welfare paradox: they appear adapted to captivity given their sedentary lifestyle, yet this surface calm can mask significant behavioral deprivation. Lions deprived of the opportunity to stalk, ambush, and engage in explosive predatory behavior show elevated stereotypy rates and reduced behavioral diversity. Social management is equally critical — solitary male housing violates the natural coalition structure of male lions, and small groups cannot provide the social complexity of wild prides.
