Cheetahs are the fastest land animals but among the most challenging to maintain in captivity. Their speed and spatial needs are nearly impossible to replicate in zoo enclosures.
Zoo cheetahs face a fundamental welfare constraint: their defining behavioral capacity — explosive high-speed running — cannot be expressed in any realistic zoo enclosure. Cheetahs deprived of running show reduced muscle tone, increased stereotypic pacing, and health vulnerabilities. Their extreme sensitivity to social stress means even nearby predators or inadequate social management triggers chronic anxiety. The combination of behavioral restriction and social stress contributes to notoriously poor captive breeding success. Some facilities use large open-range enclosures and run programs, but these remain exceptional.
