Welfare Considerations

Sea lice welfare harms occur on two levels: the chronic suffering of heavily infested farmed salmon, and the acute stress of treatment procedures. Both are significant. Heavily infested fish experience open wounds, impaired osmoregulation, and chronic pain from tissue damage. Treatment procedures — whether chemical, thermal, or mechanical — cause acute stress responses including cortisol spikes and behavioral panic. The welfare problem is self-reinforcing: stressed fish are more susceptible to infestation, and infestation causes stress. Closed containment systems that physically exclude sea lice offer the most comprehensive solution.
