The additional space, nest boxes, and perches allow behaviors completely impossible in conventional cages. However, the space remains inadequate for foraging, dust bathing in suitable substrate, or the wing-spreading and movement that aviary and outdoor systems permit. Keel bone fractures remain prevalent in enriched colonies. The welfare science consistently shows that cage-free aviary systems — particularly those with outdoor access — produce better welfare outcomes despite their management challenges.
