Grizzly bears face increasing conflict with humans as their populations recover and expand into agricultural areas. Managing these conflicts humanely is critical for both bear welfare and recovery.
Grizzly bear welfare is increasingly threatened by human expansion into recovery areas. Bears that access human food sources — garbage, bird feeders, livestock — develop habituation that typically ends in euthanasia. The welfare chain from food conditioning to death involves multiple harms: disrupted natural foraging, exposure to human settlements and roads, capture and relocation stress, and ultimately lethal management. Climate-driven food source changes are accelerating conflict by pushing bears into agricultural valleys. Non-lethal coexistence tools used proactively prevent the cycle of habituation and death.
