Crocodilians are complex reptiles often misunderstood as simple, inactive animals. Their welfare in captivity requires specific thermal, aquatic, and behavioral management.
Crocodilian welfare is frequently underestimated because their sedentary appearance suggests contentment. In reality, crocodilians are physiologically complex animals whose welfare depends critically on thermal environment quality. Without access to basking areas that allow core temperature optimization, digestion, immune function, and activity are all impaired. UV access is similarly critical for vitamin D synthesis. Small enclosures prevent the thermoregulatory movement between water and basking areas that crocodilians engage in throughout each day. Their behavioral complexity and individual recognition capacity further indicate that their cognitive welfare has been systematically underestimated.
