Free-range and pasture-raised egg labels promise outdoor access, but the quality of that access varies enormously. Understanding what meaningful outdoor access looks like matters for welfare evaluation.
The welfare gap between "free-range" as labeled and as practiced is substantial and largely invisible to consumers. Systems that provide legal free-range status through a small outdoor area with limited vegetation, no shade, and inadequate predator protection do not deliver the behavioral freedoms the label implies. Hens in well-designed pasture systems — with ample vegetation, shade, rotation, and access encouragement — show genuinely better welfare. The difference between a compliant but poorly designed free-range system and a high-quality pasture system can be greater than the difference between free-range and enriched colony.
