Welfare Considerations

The welfare gap between wild polar bear life and typical zoo conditions is among the largest of any captive species. Stereotypic pacing — repetitive purposeless movement — is a recognized indicator of psychological distress and is extremely common in captive polar bears. Enrichment programs can reduce but rarely eliminate stereotypies. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums requires enrichment programs, but the fundamental spatial and behavioral deprivation of captivity remains difficult to overcome for this species.
