Rabbits are intelligent, social animals with strong behavioral needs for movement and companionship, yet commercial rabbit farming often confines them in small bare wire cages that prevent expression of nearly all natural behaviors.
The wire battery cage system used for most farmed rabbits severely restricts movement, prevents social interaction, and causes chronic pain from foot lesions. Rabbits in these systems cannot perform binky jumps, run, dig, or engage in any of the behaviors that are essential to their wellbeing. The flooring that allows waste to fall through simultaneously causes painful foot conditions. Scientific reviews consistently rate conventional rabbit farming as producing some of the worst welfare outcomes of any farmed species per individual animal.
