Tigers are wide-ranging apex predators whose welfare in captivity depends critically on space, environmental complexity, and the ability to express natural hunting and territorial behaviors that most zoo environments cannot adequately provide.
Zoo tigers face fundamental welfare challenges that stem from the enormous gap between their natural ranging requirements and the space available even in well-resourced facilities. Stereotypic pacing is extremely common and directly indicates that the tiger is experiencing spatial and behavioral frustration. The situation is compounded by the enormous number of tigers in private ownership, where conditions are almost invariably worse than in accredited zoos. Welfare-focused zoos have made genuine improvements through larger, more complex habitats and enrichment programs, but cannot fully address the underlying space deficit.
