Water is a fundamental physiological need and behavioral interest for pigs. Restricted water access causes acute stress and frustration that manifests as aggression at drinker locations. In hot conditions, inadequate water access contributes to heat stress, as pigs use water for thermoregulation in addition to hydration. The behavioral motivation to drink and interact with water is strong in pigs, and systems that provide only minimal functional access without allowing normal drinking behavior cause frustration beyond simple physiological deprivation. Regular monitoring of drinker function and flow rate is a simple but important welfare management practice.
