Komodo dragon welfare in captivity centers on providing the thermal complexity and spatial scale that their physiology and behavior require. As ectotherms, they cannot regulate body temperature internally and must have access to precise thermal gradients — warm basking areas and cooler retreat spaces — to maintain proper metabolic function. In inadequate thermal environments, digestion, immune function, and activity all suffer. The hunting and foraging behavior that occupies much of wild Komodo time must be addressed through feeding enrichment that allows expression of predatory motivation. Well-designed large enclosures with proper thermal management and feeding enrichment can achieve reasonable welfare outcomes for this species.
