Hippopotamuses are semi-aquatic megafauna with complex social structures and specialized environmental requirements that make adequate water access and appropriate group housing central to their welfare in captivity.
Hippo welfare in captivity centers fundamentally on the provision of adequate aquatic habitat, because these animals are physiologically adapted to spend the majority of their lives in water. A hippo without access to deep water cannot thermoregulate normally, cannot protect its uniquely structured skin from desiccation and UV damage, and cannot express the aquatic behaviors that are central to its natural daily routine. Social welfare is equally important: hippos are highly social animals whose group dynamics require careful management to prevent the serious injuries that result from incompatible pairing. Enclosure design must provide sufficient pool depth for submersion, appropriate social groupings that match natural hippo social structure, and terrestrial areas that allow grazing and resting in naturalistic conditions. The complex welfare needs of hippos make them one of the more demanding megafauna to manage well in captivity.
