Vulture welfare encompasses both the acute suffering of individual birds exposed to toxins at poisoned carcasses and the broader ecological welfare implications of vulture population collapse for the animal communities whose health depends on efficient carcass removal. Individual vultures die slowly and painfully from secondary poisoning, often in large numbers at single poisoning events. The suffering of individual birds is matched by the ecological disruption that follows population collapse: in the absence of vultures, carcasses persist in the landscape for days to weeks, spreading pathogens to wild ungulates, livestock, and humans.
