Adequate water access is a fundamental welfare requirement for pigs, yet flow rates, nipple drinker design, and competition at water points cause chronic thirst and frustration in many systems.
Water is the most critical nutrient for pig welfare, yet inadequate provision is widespread in commercial facilities. Slow-flow nipple drinkers that cannot keep pace with pig demand, insufficient drinker numbers for group size, and competition from dominant pigs all create chronic thirst. Thirsty pigs show redirected drinking behaviors on pen fixtures, increased aggression, and reduced feed intake. Water quality — including temperature, cleanliness, and mineral content — also affects willingness to drink. Ensuring adequate, competition-free water access is one of the most impactful and achievable welfare improvements in commercial pig production.
