Stocking density is one of the most impactful, most tractable welfare interventions in broiler production. At conventional densities, birds cannot move freely, air quality degrades (elevated ammonia), and bedding becomes wet — contributing to painful contact dermatitis on feet and hocks. Reducing density to 25-30 kg/m2 is sufficient to enable natural locomotion, reduce injury, and improve air quality. When combined with slower-growing genetics and environmental enrichment, reduced density yields flocks with dramatically improved leg health and activity budgets. Consumer and retailer campaigns have driven meaningful policy changes in several European markets.
