Cattle without shade on hot days experience rising core temperature, panting, reduced feed intake, and in severe cases heat stroke and death. Chronic heat stress impairs immune function, increases disease susceptibility, and reduces reproductive performance. Shade provision is one of the simplest and most cost-effective welfare improvements available for pasture-based cattle and is increasingly required by welfare standards in warm climates.
