Sea lice infestations are the most significant welfare and economic problem in Atlantic salmon aquaculture, causing tissue damage and chronic stress.
Sea lice represent a chronic welfare burden that intensifies during peak infestation seasons. Affected fish show altered swimming behaviour, reduced appetite, increased oxygen consumption, and impaired stress responses — all indicators of significant discomfort. Treatment itself causes acute stress: fish are crowded, pumped, and exposed to thermal or chemical agents. The welfare challenge is that leaving infestations untreated causes ongoing tissue damage, while treating causes acute treatment stress. Research investment in sea lice vaccines, selective breeding for lice resistance, and improved non-chemical treatment protocols offers the most promising path to reducing both infestation and treatment burden simultaneously.
