Koala populations are devastated by chlamydia, causing blindness, reproductive failure, and painful urinary disease in animals already stressed by habitat loss.
Koalas with chlamydia experience chronic urinary pain, progressive blindness, and eventual inability to feed or reproduce. The combination of habitat loss that forces koalas into contact with more individuals and a disease that is difficult to treat creates a welfare crisis. Rehabilitation centers treat hundreds of koalas annually but cannot address the population-level disease burden without vaccination programs.
