Water poses several underappreciated welfare and safety risks to dogs, from drowning to toxic algae to saltwater ingestion.
Water safety is a welfare area where owner education directly prevents acute animal suffering and death. Many drowning incidents occur in backyard pools where dogs enter voluntarily but cannot find pool steps to exit; a pool ramp or designated exit point represents a low-cost, high-impact safety modification. Toxic algae risk requires active monitoring: water that appears discoloured or smells musty should be avoided entirely, and dogs who swim in unknown water should be rinsed immediately. The welfare principle is prevention — identifying and eliminating water risks before they cause the acute suffering of drowning or poisoning, rather than treating emergencies after they occur.
