Chimpanzee welfare in captivity is inseparable from social welfare. These are animals whose cognitive and emotional lives are organised around social relationships — alliances, reconciliation, status, shared care of young, and collective problem-solving. Facilities that invest in managing large, stable, well-integrated groups provide the richest social environment available in captivity. Social group stability requires careful management: introductions, conflict monitoring, and separation capability for injured individuals. The welfare dividend of good group management is substantial — well-socialised chimps in stable groups show dramatically lower stereotypy rates and more positive affective indicators than isolated or socially disrupted individuals.
