Feedlot welfare challenges are structural: concentrated animal feeding operations are designed for efficient weight gain, not for meeting the full behavioural needs of cattle. The transition from pasture to feedlot represents an acute welfare disruption — familiar social groups broken, diet changed rapidly, space dramatically reduced, and environmental stimulation removed. Ruminal acidosis from rapid grain introduction causes significant discomfort; cattle show reduced feed intake, teeth grinding, and altered posture during acute episodes. The most impactful welfare improvements in feedlot systems are slower dietary transitions (over 3-4 weeks rather than 1-2), adequate shade, mud management through drainage investment, and maintaining stable social groups from arrival.
