Adequate colostrum provision in the first hours of life is the single most impactful welfare intervention for newborn dairy calves.
Colostrum management sits at the intersection of calf welfare and disease prevention. Calves born with FPT face a lifetime of elevated disease susceptibility: respiratory infections, scours, and septicaemia occur at dramatically higher rates in calves who did not absorb adequate immunoglobulins in their first hours. The suffering of a sick calf — fever, diarrhoea, laboured breathing, reduced mobility — can be largely prevented by a management intervention that costs minutes and requires only a bucket, a tube, and knowledge of when to act. Staff training in colostrum harvesting, quality testing, and timely administration represents one of the highest-welfare-per-cost interventions available in dairy production.
