Mechanical treatments, while chemical-free, involve handling stress and can cause physical injury if not carefully managed. The welfare challenge is compounded by resistance, requiring repeated treatments with diminishing efficacy. Closed containment systems and recirculating aquaculture eliminate lice exposure entirely but require major capital investment. Consumer demand for responsibly farmed salmon can accelerate industry adoption of higher-welfare production systems that address lice at the system design level rather than through reactive treatment.
