Perches are a key welfare feature in laying hen housing, satisfying strong behavioural motivation to roost at height. Perch design — diameter, material, placement, and number — significantly affects whether this welfare benefit is actually delivered.
Perches that are too narrow, too smooth, or positioned to force awkward postures cause physical harm rather than welfare benefit. Hens with access to appropriate perches show lower stress hormone levels, better bone strength from the physical demands of mounting and dismounting, and more natural sleep behaviour. Keel bone fractures — now recognised as a major welfare issue — are partly attributable to poor perch design causing collision injuries during landing. The ideal perch is oval or rectangular in cross-section, made of wood or rubber-coated material, and positioned to allow safe approach and landing. Farmer investment in perch quality is a concrete, measurable welfare improvement.
