Sun bears are the smallest bear species and one of the least studied, facing severe pressure from deforestation, hunting, and the captive wildlife trade in Southeast Asia. Rescue centres face significant welfare challenges caring for traumatised animals.
Sun bears confiscated from the pet trade often arrive at rescue centres with profound physical and psychological damage: malnutrition, stereotypic swaying, aggression from social isolation, and physical injuries from inadequate housing. Rehabilitation requires years of careful social introduction to conspecifics, provision of forest-like foraging environments, and veterinary management of chronic health conditions. Forest release is the ultimate welfare goal but requires sufficient habitat and prior assessment of behavioural competence. Consumer demand for palm oil products driving tropical deforestation is a primary driver of habitat loss that forces sun bears into human-wildlife conflict and the pet trade. Addressing demand-side deforestation drivers is the most impactful welfare intervention at scale.
