Welfare science has traditionally focused on reducing negative states in farm animals. A growing evidence base now enables assessment of positive welfare — pleasure, comfort, play, and positive social interaction — providing a more complete picture of hen wellbeing.
Focusing only on reducing suffering leaves the question of whether animals are actually thriving unanswered. A hen free from disease and injury but confined to a barren environment with no opportunity for natural behaviour is not experiencing positive welfare, even if the Five Freedoms are technically met. Positive welfare indicators — sunbathing, vigorous dustbathing, play, voluntary social contact, and confident approach to humans — indicate that the animal is experiencing genuinely good states, not merely the absence of bad ones. Certification schemes and welfare research programs that incorporate positive welfare measures provide producers with a higher standard to aim for and consumers with more meaningful assurance about the quality of the animal's life.
