Water restriction is one of the most acutely welfare-relevant failures in laying hen systems, yet it often goes undetected because hens cannot signal thirst visibly in obvious ways. Nipple drinker systems can malfunction silently — blocked nipples, incorrect pressure, or biofilm build-up are invisible to casual inspection. Newly housed pullets may be unfamiliar with nipple systems if reared on bell drinkers, leading to a dangerous adaptation period. In multi-tier aviaries, drinker distribution across levels must match bird distribution, as dominant birds guard prime locations. Dehydration progresses rapidly in hot weather and can become life-threatening within 24-48 hours. Welfare-conscious producers audit water meters daily, check nipple flow rates weekly, and train staff to recognise dehydration signs including lethargy, sunken eyes, and dropping egg production.
