Feline hypervitaminosis A is a preventable welfare tragedy caused by well-intentioned but uninformed feeding practices. Raw liver is palatable and perceived by owners as a natural, healthy food for cats — but even small daily quantities deliver vitamin A at toxic levels over time. Affected cats experience months or years of progressive pain before diagnosis, as early signs (reduced grooming, reluctance to jump, stiff neck) are easily attributed to ageing or other causes. By the time diagnosis occurs, significant irreversible skeletal damage has usually accumulated. Post-diagnosis welfare management involves pain analgesia and dietary correction — which stops further progression but cannot reverse existing deformities. The welfare message is stark: liver should constitute no more than 5-10% of a cat's diet, and cat owners feeding home-prepared or raw diets must understand basic nutrient toxicity thresholds.
