Enriched colony cages were introduced as a welfare improvement over conventional battery cages, but research reveals their benefits are modest and many key hen behavioural needs remain unmet.
Enriched colony cages represent a genuine but limited welfare improvement over the conventional battery cages they replaced across the EU following the 2012 directive. Hens in enriched cages show fewer abnormal behaviours and better bone strength from limited perch use. However, the enrichments provided remain inadequate for core behavioural motivations. Dust bathing — a behaviour hens are strongly motivated to perform — is frustrated by the absence of suitable substrate; hens perform vacuum dust bathing on wire floors. Scratch areas provided are too small relative to flock size for meaningful foraging. Keel bone fractures occur at rates of 50-80% in some colony cage studies, similar to conventional systems. Aggression and feather pecking persist. The enriched cage is best understood as a transitional system — less bad than conventional cages but far from adequate. Many producers and jurisdictions are moving toward cage-free aviaries which, while also imperfect, better satisfy hens' behavioural repertoire.
