Precision livestock monitoring represents a genuine welfare opportunity if implemented with welfare — not merely productivity — as the primary outcome measure. The welfare case is compelling: cattle suffering from early-stage respiratory disease, lameness, or metabolic disorders that are detected within 24 hours of onset experience significantly less cumulative suffering than those identified days later. Technology reduces the problem of scale — humans cannot monitor thousands of cattle adequately through walking inspections alone. However, technology introduces new welfare risks: algorithmic false negatives can create false reassurance, reducing the frequency of skilled human observation that can detect what sensors miss. Technology should complement, not replace, high-quality stock-person training and daily physical assessment. The welfare benefit of monitoring technology is only realised when it is paired with clear action protocols that specify when and how flagged animals are examined and treated.
