Induced molting represents one of the clearest examples of a farming practice where animal welfare costs are deliberately imposed to extend economic productivity. Feed withdrawal for 5-14 days causes acute hunger and distress measurable through stress behaviours including stereotypic pecking, increased aggression, and elevated corticosterone. Body weight loss of up to a third represents physiological stress equivalent to serious illness. The immunosuppression that accompanies starvation increases flock disease burden, creating a secondary welfare harm. Alternative molt-induction diets using low-protein or high-mineral feeds avoid complete starvation but still induce nutritional stress. The most welfare-positive approach is to replace spent laying flocks rather than extend their productive life through molting — an approach that also avoids the welfare costs of a second laying cycle in already depleted birds. Consumer pressure for higher-welfare egg products reduces economic incentives to use molt induction.
