Sea lice infestation is the most significant health and welfare problem in Atlantic salmon aquaculture, and both the infestation itself and the treatments used to control it cause substantial fish welfare harm.
Sea lice management in salmon farming represents a chronic, industry-wide welfare challenge with no currently available low-welfare solution. The lice themselves cause progressive tissue damage — in severe infestations, the skull of salmon parr can be exposed. The host fish show increased agitation, surface jumping, and reduced feeding as infestation intensifies. Treatment interventions intended to reduce lice burden create their own welfare costs: thermal treatments using 34C water cause thermal shock; mechanical lice removal systems physically traumatise fish through hydraulic forces; chemical bath treatments involve confinement in crowded, chemically treated water. The development of lice resistance to available chemotherapeutants means that treatment efficacy has declined, requiring more frequent or higher-dose interventions. Genetic breeding for lice resistance and biological control using cleaner fish (wrasse, lumpfish) offer partial solutions, but cleaner fish welfare introduces another set of concerns.
