Dairy cow social welfare is an underappreciated dimension of cattle welfare that deserves more systematic attention. The evidence that cows form preferred associations is robust: given free choice in large herds, individuals consistently affiliate with specific partners, synchronise behaviour, and show physiological stress when separated. Regrouping — a routine management event in large dairy herds — disrupts established social relationships and triggers aggression as dominance hierarchies are re-established. This stress reduces production in the short term and welfare continuously. The cow-calf separation issue is particularly acute: both parties vocalise persistently for days following separation, with mothers searching the area where the calf was last seen. Extended contact programmes reduce the intensity of separation distress and improve calf immune status through prolonged colostrum access. Maintaining stable social groups wherever possible — avoiding unnecessary regrouping and minimising pen changes — represents a feasible, low-cost welfare improvement.
