Okapi welfare in zoos is a case study in the welfare challenges of housing highly specialised forest species in temperate zoo environments. Their dietary selectivity means that nutritional completeness is genuinely difficult to achieve: wild okapis choose from over 100 plant species based on nutritional content and seasonal availability, and zoo diets must approximate this diversity with limited browse options. Their solitary nature means that social housing beyond mother-offspring pairs requires careful management, but complete isolation violates their capacity for social interaction during natural mating seasons. Stress sensitivity is particularly important: unlike more behaviourally flexible species, okapis respond to environmental perturbations with physiological changes that can progress rapidly to health problems. Exhibit design must provide visual barriers and retreat options that respect their secretive nature. The conservation rationale for okapi captive populations is strong, but only justified if welfare is genuinely sufficient for individuals to thrive rather than merely survive.
