Zero-grazing (indoor confinement) systems for dairy cattle offer management advantages but restrict natural behaviour, reduce positive welfare experiences, and pose specific health risks that require careful welfare management.
Zero-grazing dairy welfare is a case where production efficiency and welfare are in genuine tension. Indoor systems allow precise nutritional management, disease monitoring, and year-round production optimisation — and well-managed zero-grazing herds can have lower lameness rates than poorly managed pasture systems. However, the welfare deficit from eliminated grazing behaviour is real and measurable. Grazing is a highly motivated behaviour in cattle: cows given pasture access after indoor confinement show increased locomotion, grazing, and positive affect indicators including play running and head tossing. The absence of these positive experiences in zero-grazing systems represents a welfare cost even when negative welfare indicators are well-managed. The "Five Domains" welfare model explicitly includes positive experiences in welfare assessment — and zero-grazing systems score poorly on this dimension regardless of health outcomes. Mixed systems combining high-quality indoor management with seasonal pasture access where feasible represent the most comprehensive welfare approach.
