The welfare status of farmed shrimp is scientifically contested but the precautionary case for improved management is strong. Decapod crustaceans were recognised as sentient under UK law in 2021, and shrimp exhibit physiological and behavioural responses to harmful stimuli consistent with a capacity for suffering. At very high stocking densities, the combination of hypoxia, ammonia stress, physical crowding, and elevated disease burden creates conditions that are almost certainly aversive. Disease outbreaks that kill millions of shrimp in days represent both economic and potential welfare catastrophe. The welfare trajectory for shrimp farming should include density limits, mandatory water quality monitoring, improved disease prevention, and welfare-conscious slaughter (rapid chilling or high-CO2 methods) to replace live boiling or live dismemberment.
