Access to pasture for beef cattle provides a range of welfare benefits compared to fully housed systems, but the quality of those welfare benefits depends on pasture management, stocking density, and seasonal conditions.
Pasture access is a significant welfare benefit for beef cattle because it enables expression of the full behavioural repertoire that housed systems restrict. Grazing occupies 6-8 hours per day for cattle and involves the integration of walking, foraging choice, and social interaction that indoor systems cannot replicate. However, pasture access is not automatically beneficial: degraded or overstocked pastures with limited shade, poor drainage, and parasite loads can create welfare conditions worse than well-managed indoor housing. The welfare value of pasture is conditional on its quality. High-welfare pasture-based beef production requires rotational grazing to maintain sward quality, appropriate stocking densities, shade provision, and parasite management strategies that do not rely on routine blanket anthelmintic treatment. Certification schemes that verify pasture quality and management are more meaningful welfare indicators than label descriptions alone.
