Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most economically and welfare-significant disease in beef feedlot systems, causing pain, fever, and respiratory distress in millions of cattle annually, often inadequately treated.
BRD causes genuine suffering through fever, respiratory distress, anorexia, and the systemic effects of bacterial infection and pneumonia. The pain associated with pleuropneumonia is significant; cattle with advanced BRD are experiencing discomfort comparable to severe pneumonia in other mammals. Despite this, analgesia is not routinely included in BRD treatment protocols in many systems. Early detection through precision livestock monitoring technologies dramatically improves welfare outcomes because antibiotic treatment is most effective in the first 24-48 hours of infection. Cattle pulled for treatment after 3-4 days of undetected illness are more likely to develop chronic lung damage and long-term welfare consequences. Feedlot welfare improvement requires investment in early detection technology, mandatory analgesic use alongside antibiotic treatment, and pre-arrival risk reduction through improved transport and commingling management.
