Bears that in the wild would spend hours daily climbing, digging, and manipulating their environment become bored and stereotypic in simple, low-complexity enclosures. The arboreal element is particularly important — sun bears naturally sleep and rest in tree canopies and should have access to elevated platforms and climbing structures at significant height. Foraging enrichment that requires physical effort and problem-solving — honey-filled logs, buried insects, wrapped food items — engages the natural feeding intelligence that defines sun bear ecology. The welfare of rescued individuals from the wildlife trade and bile industry requires additional rehabilitation support to address the psychological trauma of prolonged inappropriate captivity. Forest-access rehabilitation models offer the most appropriate welfare environment for bears destined for release.
