Malayan tapirs are striking black-and-white forest mammals whose captive welfare depends critically on access to water for thermoregulation, skin health, and behavioural expression of their semi-aquatic lifestyle.
Malayan tapir welfare in captivity is frequently compromised by inadequate water provision and exhibit design. Tapirs that are denied swimming access cannot properly thermoregulate in warm weather or express the semi-aquatic behaviour central to their natural life. Shallow wading pools that allow cooling but not swimming fail to meet the depth and space requirements for meaningful aquatic enrichment. Exhibit flooring must provide sufficient drainage and non-slip substrate, as tapirs that cannot move safely in their environment develop locomotor problems. The nocturnal nature of tapirs means daytime exhibition forces activity during their natural rest period; facilities without night-reverse lighting or overnight exhibition alternatives cause chronic sleep disruption. As one of the rarest large mammals in Southeast Asia, the captive tapir population — managed through coordinated breeding programmes — contributes to genetic conservation while the wild habitat continues to shrink.
