Digital dermatitis is both highly welfare-significant and highly preventable. Chronic lameness from this condition causes persistent pain that affects every aspect of a cow's daily life — her ability to compete for feed, rest comfortably, and express normal social behaviour. Lame cows spend more time lying on hard surfaces, worsening secondary problems. Effective herd-level control requires addressing the environmental conditions — wet walkways, heavy slurry contamination, and poor cubicle hygiene — that create the bacterial environment for infection to thrive. Producers with well-managed footbath programmes and strong lameness monitoring can reduce herd prevalence dramatically. Lameness scoring as a routine welfare audit tool should be standard practice on all dairy farms.
