Boar taint — an off-flavour in pork from entire male pigs — has historically driven routine surgical castration of piglets, but welfare concerns about pain during castration are driving adoption of alternatives including immunocastration and genetic selection.
The welfare case against surgical castration without anaesthesia is clear — it causes genuine acute pain and post-operative sensitivity in neonatal piglets at a scale of hundreds of millions annually. Immunocastration eliminates this welfare burden entirely while preventing boar taint, but has faced resistance from some consumer groups despite producing meat indistinguishable from surgically castrated pigs in taste tests. Entire male production with early slaughter avoids both welfare concerns and requires less intervention. Industry-wide adoption of alternatives has been slower than the welfare evidence justifies, driven by cost, consumer perception management, and supply chain complexity. Regulatory mandates requiring anaesthesia for any castration or phasing out surgical castration entirely are the most effective levers for change.
