Chronic pancreatitis is a painful and often underdiagnosed condition in dogs. Understanding its management is essential for maintaining quality of life in affected animals.
Chronic pancreatitis causes persistent abdominal pain that dogs cannot communicate directly to owners. Many affected dogs live with unrecognised discomfort for months before diagnosis. Pain assessment using validated behavioural indicators — postural changes, activity reduction, altered interactions — helps identify suffering that might otherwise be missed. Once diagnosed, management with low-fat diets, anti-nausea medication, and analgesics when appropriate can substantially improve quality of life. However, dietary restriction must be maintained lifelong, and flares triggered by dietary indiscretion, stress, or concurrent illness can cause acute suffering. Regular monitoring and a strong owner-vet partnership are essential to detect deterioration early.
