Tail docking of dairy cattle was once common practice in some countries, but the evidence base now clearly shows it is harmful and unnecessary. Understanding the welfare science helps support evidence-based policy.
Tail docking imposes acute pain at the time of the procedure and may cause chronic neuropathic pain from neuroma formation. It removes a functional appendage: cattle tails serve as fly-swishing tools, and docked cows show increased fly-avoidance behaviours indicating ongoing irritation. The critical point from a welfare perspective is that the purported hygiene benefits do not materialise in controlled trials. Milk hygiene depends on udder cleanliness, milking technique, and housing — none of which are improved by tail docking. The procedure is therefore an unnecessary welfare harm performed on the basis of discredited rationale. Its continued use in some jurisdictions represents a policy failure that evidence-based advocacy can address.
