Hippopotamuses are semi-aquatic animals with specific behavioural and physiological needs that must be met in captivity. Water access, social grouping, and substrate quality are the key welfare determinants.
Hippo welfare in captivity hinges on water access. Without deep water for prolonged immersion, skin integrity deteriorates rapidly, thermoregulation is compromised, and animals cannot express natural floating and submerged resting behaviour. Social housing of multiple males in insufficient space generates serious aggression that cannot be escaped — captive males have killed conspecifics and keepers. Female-only or single-male groups require careful management. Hippopotamus behaviour is strongly driven by territorial motivation that cannot simply be suppressed by reduced space. Positive reinforcement training for voluntary veterinary cooperation significantly reduces the stress of necessary medical management for a species for which chemical restraint carries substantial risk.
