Translocation imposes an acute welfare burden on individual wolves that must be weighed against population-level conservation benefits. Capture using nets, traps, or dart guns causes acute fear and pain; chemical immobilisation temporarily removes the animal's ability to protect itself. Transport in crates causes prolonged stress. Release into an unfamiliar landscape requires rapid cognitive and physical adjustment to new prey availability, terrain, and conspecific presence. Wolves that fail to establish in new territories may range widely, increasing exposure to human conflict. The welfare of translocated wolves can be improved through careful pre-release conditioning, selection of release sites with adequate prey, and rapid response to signs of difficulty post-release.
