Fish slaughter without effective stunning imposes preventable suffering at enormous scale. Billions of farmed fish are slaughtered annually; even if only a fraction die without effective stunning, the aggregate welfare cost is significant. The key challenge is scaling welfare-positive methods to industrial production while maintaining cost-effectiveness. Percussive stunning requires operator training and consistent technique; electrical stunning requires equipment investment and calibration. The farming industry has made progress — particularly in salmon — but many species including trout, sea bream, and carp continue to be slaughtered routinely without pre-slaughter stunning.
