Winter housing creates a welfare environment fundamentally different from pasture. Ventilation failure — too little air movement in an attempt to conserve heat — allows respiratory pathogens to accumulate and disease to spread rapidly through groups. Inadequate bedding forces cattle to lie on cold, hard surfaces, reducing lying time and causing pressure sores. Feed barrier space ratios below one per animal create competitive exclusion that leaves subordinate cattle nutritionally marginalised. These problems interact: a nutritionally compromised, respiratory-diseased animal lying on inadequate bedding in a poorly ventilated building is experiencing multiple simultaneous welfare harms. Good housing management addresses each dimension: natural ventilation through ridge and Yorkshire boarding, ample clean straw, adequate feed space, and daily stockperson observation are the pillars of winter cattle welfare.
