Weaning is one of the most stressful events in a beef or dairy calf's life. Understanding the welfare science behind separation distress and evidence-based management strategies helps reduce suffering at this critical stage.
Weaning imposes acute welfare costs on both calf and cow. Vocalisation studies document distress responses lasting 48-72 hours post-separation. Calves show reduced feed intake, impaired immune function, and increased disease susceptibility in the immediate post-weaning period. Cows show restlessness, reduced milk let-down (even without calves present), and persistent searching behaviour. The welfare impact is real and measurable. Evidence-based management reduces but does not eliminate this distress: fence-line weaning maintains social contact while preventing nutritional dependency; two-stage weaning allows appetite adaptation before social separation; group weaning provides social buffering. Selecting for breeds with lower maternal attachment intensity — which research suggests varies significantly — may offer a genetic route to lower weaning stress in future.
